Speculating On The Future Of The Nz Dairy Industry
article by Ian Proudfoot
Note opinion expressed in relation to animal wellbeing are unfounded as good systems and good farmers will achieve better outcomes than found in pasture based systems. (winter and heat stress as 2 examples of pasture based exposure)
Environmentally Pasture based free range cows loose most nutrients to the soil and consequent water ways (N leaching) so although green pasture looks good in the consumers eye, fact is it is more polluting and damaging than housed systems which capture all nutrients for later use and no damage is done to the pasture in wet times, winter or spring (pugging)
Our green image can be enhanced by this system allowing farmers to grow and use more home grown grass

SST Roadshow Waikato 09
SST , Dairy farmers have you heard? SST Roadshow Waikato Technipharm is currently conducting a Roadshow in the Waikato to introduce and show Dairy Farmers the benefits of its SST (Speed Sensitive Teatspray system) For this purpose a vehicle is fitted with a complete working SST teatspray system and DVD presentation which shows farmers how the systems works The system was developed to overcome all alternative auto teatspray systems failure in detecting the speed of cows and as a result missing or applying to much or not enough teatspray. Proper teatspraying is proven to aid significantly in the control of mastitis and Somatic Cell Counts. Automatic Teatspraying means the focus of the milkharvesting is uninterrupted which often means gains in milking time speed which ultimately results in savings in Labour and Machine running. This means cost savings and less environmental impact. With the highest payout from last year dropped to now third highest payout in history it?s of every farmers interest to reduce cost and increase labour efficiencies. Now with SST farmers have the opportunity to engage a truly automatic system which is fully automated and accurate, what's more they no longer are exposed to manual handgun vapours in the shed which can be a health hazard. The system was awarded an award at the last National Fieldays as part of its fully automated Seelect a cow drafting system, which uses SST to draft cows in line. Farmers interested in an on farm visit should call 0800 80 90 98 and register their interest

Stand Off Bedding
Back ground article on stand off bedding In the end most stand off pads are a short term solution to a long term problem
Bedding options involving bark or peelings are very costly, annual replacement and labour and machinery cost are high. Significant risk issues exist in pathogen both for animals respiratory and human respiratory systems. Stray pathogen affecting milk and udder health are also risk not to be ignored.
In the Netherlands soft bedding or compost housing is under severe limitations due to these factors.
Alternative bedding options are available but not widely known or used (yet) in NZ
Talk to TechniPharm or Cowhouse Ltd consulting for "an alternative view"
